How come with the 823946385748453 posts about the topic, I am the only one you notice? Seriously though :| And you obviously don't seem to understand what I'm fighting. I'm basically saying the people on this board (sans a couple) are way too harsh on these teens and torturing them over a dog is so absurd and cynical.

Little Sister wrote:
Chronyk and Muazzam have never had pets. So that explains a lot, and why they see the dog as just "property."

It's too bad you feel that way, and it saddens me that there are probably many more like you out there : (

I have two pet fish that I take care of daily and keep in a tank with a light and filtered water. I know how it feels like to take care of an animal, but if someone killed a fish, It wouldn't drive me to want them to be burned alive, sent to jail, or mauled by rottweilers.

OfTheMoon wrote:

The difference is as follows.
It's difficult to feel as compassionate toward insects. Our immediate reaction is disgust, fear, or hostility. Insects are more feral (if that's the right word to use). They hatch, they feed, they work, they fight, they sex, they die in a drone like fashion. Try to hug an insect and it's not likely to give a damn and return the warmth. We can respect the insect and not harm it. But when the insect is indeed harmed, not too many people will care.

A creature such as a dog is easy to feel compassion for. They are for the most part hyper and fun loving animals. They love getting a belly rub, they follow you around, they sleep beside you, and they stick by you in dangerous situations. They are loyal creatures that return the warmth you give them. In that return of affection, both man and dog form a bond. The same way one human and another connect. This bond is especially strong when the man and dog grow up with each other. When such a thing is possible with an animal, people will question and react in opposition to any cruelty to them.

Say what you will about pets being "property", putting them along the same category as a phone or yard fence. The government sees you as a number with money but that's not true. You're more than that. You're a human being, a living creature with emotions. The same is true for a dog, they are someone's companion.
I love my cat the same way a father loves his son. I'd look for him across the world if he ever got lost. I'd go bare knuckles against a rabid animal if he was ever in danger. I cherish my cat so you'd best believe I'd use the law to it's fullest if anyone ever set him on fire. I'd dedicate my life to reminding those responsible of what they did.

Look at someone's dog or cat next time and convince yourself they're just property who should not deserve equal justice. Then look at someone's child and repeat because that's exactly how you're looking at this.

You have a bias towards dogs, and that's cool, but you clearly can't justify how dogs are more important or more "valuable" (due to lack of a better word) then bugs.

YOU may feel fear and terror at the sight of insects. YOU may feel love and compassion from a dog. However, I see fear when I see dogs. It's just the way I am.

A dog may FEEL like a family member, but if the family takes this to court to sue them, they cannot demand money for emotional distress, because in law, a dog is just like a car. If someone set my beloved car that I've had for 10 years on fire, I can't state "emotional distress" Because in the end, it's a possession. You can fight about the attachment to this pet, you can fight about the peril this family is struck with and how it has fucked up their son, but in the end, the court sees it as a possession :|

It 'happens all the time' and you continue to do it (I assume), so I can't imagine you feeling too upset about it.

nah i feel pretty terrible every time a butterfly goes through my spokes and has to suffer and/or die just cause it was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was a day in particular where the trail was so full of them I turned around and went home and didn't take my bike out for a couple days afterward ^^ and I purposely do try as hard as possible to ride without hitting anything every time. taking life without purpose upsets me to a certian extent with no exceptions, no matter how great or little the impact on my own life. Obviously i'll dwell on it less if it's something as far removed from human beings as an insect but that shouldnt suggest I don't regret seeing them die for the sake of our own convenience whenever that happens around me.

squib wrote:
You are basically saying this act "should be treated as if it was committed against a human being", right? In my opinion, there is a clear distinction between bad and worse in cases like this. I'd be far more outraged if this happened to a human being - defenceless or not, than I would be if a trapped, defenceless spider was burned alive. I'm pretty sure you would as well. I feel like I have to mention that I really do think that this dog being tortured like that is awful. But I'd feel much more a gutpunch if this happened to a human being - and I would say that that would be worse.

Of course i'd feel worse if it were a a human or god forbid someone that I know... i'm just saying that in that case it would be an unspeakably horrific and sickening act which is exactly the same as I view it now. Whether it's bad or worse depending on what it happens to isnt an issue I'm concerned with, I hate for any living thing to be tortured and no less for the sake of our entertainment. Whether the victim is dogs or bugs or people it's bad; that fact doesn't change. How bad it is depending on varying circumstance is a matter of secondary importance to me, someone who's in no position to solve the actual problem. No matter what it's Bad End Of Story and I wish for it to never happen to anyone or anything even though that's unrealistic. So it's just surprising to me when someone's immediate reaction to this article is (or at least comes across as) "Lol whatever no big deal it Could have been worse but since it wasn't I don't have to care about it."

squib wrote:
Agree with this as well, I'm just saying a lot of people are scarily overreacting to it by proposing extreme punishment, as well as other inhumane acts that sound just as cruel as teenager's initial offence.

And while I agree with that completely if it ever happened in front of my to my dogs or cat I guarantee the first thing to run through my mind would not be "Wow, these poor disturbed individuals I must ensure they recieve immediate aid and mental treatment at whatever cost nessecary to cure them~." I'd want to beat the motherfuckers to the ground with the nearest blunt object, wouldn't anybody? Whether that's moral or not or if it would solve anything in the end would be the least relevant ideas in the heat of the moment. I'm not saying this because i'm demented or anything I'm just sympathetic since I love my pets and it's human instinct to try to protect things that matter to you when they're being threatened. I'm sure the people you feel are overreacting about this would agree/

I don't really want to put words in Muazz's mouth, but I'm sure he meant they are 'property' in terms of how this would be judged by law or something, and not his personal opinion (maybe it is, I don't know). From reading Muazz's posts it seems like he definitely thinks this whole situation is very cruel/awful, but he also thinks there has been an extreme overreaction as well.

I know, I'm simply disagreeing with bringing it up in that context at all, I don't know how somebody could have the heart to think that's anything worth arguing here. It's shocking to me that anybody would respond to this with anything but a thorough expression of their utter discontent. But then again maybe its just because I'm more sensitive and a better person than all of you, that would explain it all ^^

I need something deeper, and more meaningful. I need a better understanding...a true understanding...of everything around me. I need to feel the connections I already know are there. But how? What is there that is possibly available to me that would satisfy my need for thorough comprehension of mysteries that are beyond humanity?

My greatest fear isn't the unknown. It's the thought of never knowing.

There is something here...something we can't see, something magical and mystical and beyond our knowledge. There are truths to be learned...but how? We feel these truths on occasion, we are aware of one of the most horrifying truths out there...that we simply do not know . Its impossible to find answers when we don't even know what questions to ask.

Sentience wears on me like some great burden. Surely self awareness has some purpose, right? What need would we have to be aware of ourselves as individuals if this ability were not to serve some greater purpose? Is sentience an instinct? Is it something we just do? And if so, that must mean it is a mechanism, along with the rest of our instinctual behaviors, intended to govern how we go about existence. But for what? We know why we have flight or fight instincts. We know why we have maternal and paternal instincts. But we hit that huge stumble in our stride when we try to understand why we try to understand. What possible need could we have for "considering ourselves" as entities separate from others?

Sorry to get all existential, but I'm having one of those nights were I'm confused about our purpose, if any, and life just seems to provide a million more questions, but zero answers. I don't mind feeling inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, I just wish I knew what the grand scheme was.

^ I don't think there is any 'grand scheme'. But I do think there is an evolutionary function to consciousness/self-awareness, although I don't think there is a definite, clear answer on what that function is. But it definitely is a 'mechanism'. Probably has to do with survival, but that's too vague and obvious <_< Maybe some of its functions has to do with learning and being able to empathise with others. A lot of stuff surrounding consciousness is mysterious, and I agree that it does suck that we don't know, and that there are many things in life that we'll simply die not knowing =]

edit - your post lead me to googling stuff about consciousness and its function. There are a lot of theories and stuff out there so if you're really interested, maybe you can search it up (evolutionary function of consciousness / neuroscience and consciousness) or try to find a good book on the topic. A lot of the stuff gets very detailed and dry though, and some sources start going into like non-scientific philosophy and metaphysics or something ;-;

^ Hmm...great life purpose. Every day i seem to wonder that as well, what we should do, if we are destined to do a certain thing and if we can change our future. so many questions left unanswered in life that many believe we will never know the answer to. My theory is that we will know when we die what everything was for, or perhaps we learn and that is why we die, so that we may not tell others the secret. But i guess that just makes more questions...

Anyway my days have just been pretty boring and consist of writing and watching films. I wish my school holidays lasted forever though

Hmm...perhaps "grand scheme" wasn't the right way to phrase it, because I agree that there isn't a grand scheme. I simply meant everything that exists, and it's place within existence, whether that was pre-ordained or not. Branching into the metaphysical is certainly a possibility, but I'm less inclined to believe that there is a rhyme or reason to any of existence, which doesn't stand in line with many metaphysical thoughts and views. I believe that we're self aware by accident, and I'm so fascinated by how such an accident can occur, and the amazing result of sentient matter. But you're right, there is certainly a lot of material dealing with the subject(s) available. My only problem with it, is that besides understanding the rough mechanics of how our brain works, there is no definitive source for information...anything dealing with sentience, our "meaning" or "purpose" is opinion, sometimes backed up by science, but even then is debatable. I suppose you hit the nail on the head...we'll die without ever having the answers. That just kind of worries me for some reason...I could die content (not happy, content) if I could just "know it all". C'est la vie.

@ Hamato...being a broke ass white boy is indeed a pretty crappy thing.

In a move that surprised myself, I actually have the next few months of my life planned out.

I plan on saving up at least two thousand dollars to help pay for a college certificate program which will help me in training for a better paying job and make me a valuable worker. With said high paying job, I can then better afford to pay for college and study business, writing, art, and eventually game design (if I work hard enough). Getting my W2 will be the first major step.

For now, if I can get a job elsewhere (as I can no longer put up with doing the work of 2 to 3 people and run a store, and getting put down for not finishing the extra workload) I will quit my current job. If not, I will tough it out until after the holiday season and if my employer once again does not send me my W2, I will leave on the spot and contact the IRS and basically use the law. The last thing I need is to be sent to jail and have "Tax Evasion" permanently put on my record.

Either way, I'm not staying with this job past the coming months. Time to move on with the next part of my life and go for big.
