RE: Mortal Kombat’s 20th Anniversary Fe... Reply with quote
It had been the joint ambition of both Ed Boon and John Tobias back in 1991 to create a video game starring well-known action star Jean-Claude Van Damme. When negotiations with the Frenchman fell through, their attention turned to creating a direct competitor to Capcom’s highly successful Street Fighter II.

The original Mortal Kombat team consisted of only four staff — Ed Boon as programmer, John Tobias and John Vogel as artists, and Dan Forden as sound designer. Through their combined efforts and those of the actors portraying their digitised counterparts Mortal Kombat was unleashed to the public in August of 1992 to rave reviews. Little did the team realise that the franchise was set to explode in the years to come...

With Mortal Kombat’s 20th anniversary mere months away, GameSpot have released a teaser showcasing what looks like an in-house documentary. Featuring familiar faces such as those of Ho-Sung Pak, Daniel Pesina and Steve Beran, the featurette looks to be an in-depth homage to what has become one of gaming’s most influential franchises and should be released in its entirety sometime in the near future.

UPDATE: GameSpot have released their feature, which can be now viewed in its entirety above.

Judging from the teaser video, this looks like it'll be a very interesting documentary. It's good to see that the 20th anniversary hasn't been forgotten.

On that note, it's slightly unsettling to me thinking that I was in the process of potty training when the first Mortal Kombat game launched. Wow.
