Sareena Edit this entry
Click for larger image Sareena is from the Netherrealm and a former assassin for Quan Chi, but turned against him. Her young and beautiful appearance hides her true form of a hideous demon. In the past, she required Quan Chi's magic to sustain her human form, but since recently escaping the Netherrealm, she has managed to find a way to maintain her form without him. She currently has a neutral alignment, since her motives for the most part remain unknown.

The demon Sareena first appeared in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as one of Quan Chi's personal assassins. She and her two partners, Kia and Jataaka, were ordered to kill Sub-Zero before he reached Quan Chi. They were defeated, but Sub-Zero strangely spared Sareena's life. Later, as Sub-Zero battled Quan Chi, Sareena suddenly appeared and helped him defeat the sorcerer. After expressing her desire to escape the Netherrealm with him, she was shot in the back with a bolt of energy by Shinnok. She collapsed into an enraged Sub-Zero's arms and appeared to die.

It is later revealed in Mortal Kombat Tournament Edition that Sareena was not killed by Shinnok's attack, but rather, her human form was destroyed. Her essence was then banished to the fifth plane of the Netherrealm as punishment for her betrayal, where she would suffer for years. After years of entrapment, Sareena discovered the portal Quan Chi and Scorpion used to escape the Netherrealm shortly before Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance. She went through the portal and was transported to Outworld where she later discovered a way to restore her human form without Quan Chi's magic by absorbing the energy of the realm.

Shortly after regaining her human form, Sareena encountered the younger brother of the Sub-Zero she had met years before. Feeling he owed her for helping his brother, Sub-Zero granted her sanctuary with the Lin Kuei back on Earthrealm.

Scorpion Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
Scorpion is an undead, hell-spawned ninja spectre who walks the grounds of the Mortal Kombat world to seek revenge against those responsible for the death of his clan and family. He is easily recognised by his yellow and black clad ninja uniform. Unmasked, his head is a (sometimes flaming) skull. Despite the fact that he has, in the past, joined the forces of evil (only if they promise to provide him the means of being alive on Earth, or to take revenge), he is not inherently evil. He has been known to assist the game's heroes, but his alignment could change at any given moment, depending on what he is offered in return.

Many fans consider Scorpion to be an anti-hero, pointing out that many of his endings have always shown him doing something that benefits the heroes. In addition, his characteristics, persona and his general point of being dependent only on himself have all contributed to his popularity. Scorpion has always been a loner by nature, and has a deadly combination of unwavering tenacity and ferocity, in addition to his deadly martial arts background.

Scorpion was manipulated by Quan Chi, who promised him life and used the ninja spectre to defeat his nemesis, Sub-Zero. However, he has a sense of honour and appreciates the value of human life. Because of his undead status, Scorpion is practically impossible to permanently defeat.

'Scorpion' was the code name of one of the Shirai-Ryu's finest — a ninja assassin named Hanzo Hasashi. It is known that his father, a former member of the Shirai-Ryu, had forbidding his son from joining the Shirai-Ryu because he did not want his son to live his life as an assassin. However, Hanzo was forced to join in order to provide his family with a comfortable life. During the events of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, Hanzo was hired by Quan Chi to find a map hidden in the Himalayas. However, Quan Chi had also requested for the services of Sub-Zero, who belonged to the rival Lin Kuei clan. The theory of hiring two ninja was simple: in case one of them failed, the other would succeed and Quan Chi would be closer to unlocking unknown and ultimate power.

Interestingly enough, both Hanzo and Sub-Zero succeeded in getting to their destination, but the two met each other reaching for the same map they were sent out to acquire. Because the Shirai-Ryu and the Lin Kuei are natural and fierce enemies, Sub-Zero and Hanzo fought, with Sub-Zero gaining the upper advantage. As Hanzo lay on the ground, defeated, he begged and pleaded with Sub-Zero to spare his life, but Sub-Zero decapitated him and left his body where it fell. Hanzo would fall into the pits of the Netherrealm itself, where it was believed either Quan Chi or Shinnok turned him into a ninja spectre. Quan Chi then told him that the Lin Kuei had massacred his entire clan and family. Fuelled by an undying rage and thirst for retribution, Scorpion vowed to not only murder Sub-Zero himself, but also the entire Lin Kuei Clan.

Scorpion would not meet Sub-Zero again until a brief encounter in the Netherrealm, where Sub-Zero had been sent by Raiden to regain the amulet from Shinnok and Quan Chi. The two fought, but Sub-Zero defeated Scorpion again and escaped from the undead assassin's wrath. Sub-Zero was later invited to participate in Shang Tsung's tournament of Mortal Kombat; unknown to the Lin Kuei warrior, Scorpion had been invited as well, and the two met on Shang Tsung's boat.

While Scorpion and Sub-Zero did not meet at the tournament itself, they did meet in the aftermath of Mortal Kombat. With Goro's defeat at the hands of Liu Kang, Shang Tsung became furious. He challenged Liu Kang himself. Raiden led Scorpion and Sub-Zero to battle Shang Tsung's army, and once they were defeated, Scorpion and Sub-Zero turned on each other. Though Sub-Zero was a difficult opponent, Scorpion eventually won the battle and slew his long-time nemesis. With his mission accomplished, Scorpion turned to ash.

A year later, Scorpion learned of Sub-Zero's plans to compete in the second tournament. Enraged at the idea that his murderer had survived and his vengeance was incomplete, Scorpion followed Sub-Zero into the realm of Outworld, where Shao Kahn hosted the second tournament. It is unknown whether or not Sub-Zero and Scorpion met, but Scorpion was a witness to one of Sub-Zero's battles, in which he saw Sub-Zero sparing the life of an opponent. Scorpion did not understand why the Lin Kuei warrior had grown so merciful. He later came to the realisation that this Sub-Zero was the younger brother of his murderer, who was sent to complete his brother's failed mission. No longer bearing a grudge against this Sub-Zero, Scorpion was summoned back to the damnation the Netherrealm.

When Shao Kahn invaded Earthrealm and unsuccessfully tried to conquer the Netherrealm as well, Scorpion was inadvertently set free, and began walking the grounds of Earth once more. He pledged allegiance to no one, taking neither friends nor enemies. Shao Kahn, however, recognised Scorpion's superior warrior skills, and enlisted the ninja in his forces under the promise of being granted life, for as long as the Outworld portal was open, Scorpion could not be pulled back into the Netherrealm. Scorpion's allegiance with Shao Kahn quickly dissolved when he discovered that Sub-Zero (whom he had vowed not to harm) was one of Earth's warriors whom Shao Kahn wanted to kill. He turned on Shao Kahn, and sided with the Earthrealm warriors in their final showdown with the evil emperor. With Kahn and his minions defeated, Earthrealm reverted back to normal, causing Scorpion to return to hell, only to one day rise up once more.

During the events of Mortal Kombat Gold, Scorpion was deceived by Quan Chi into believing that the younger Sub-Zero was involved in the murders of his family and clan, and also offered him life in exchange for the spectre's assistance in the war with the Elder Gods, which Scorpion eagerly accepted. Scorpion eventually caught up with Sub-Zero, and the two began their final battle; after a long, epic battle, Scorpion emerged the victor. As Scorpion stood triumphantly over Sub-Zero, the defeated warrior proclaiming innocence, Quan Chi appeared and revealed that he had arranged for the killing of the Shirai-Ryu and Scorpion's family. Before Scorpion could speak, Quan Chi attempted to send him back to the Netherrealm. Scorpion grabbed Quan Chi before the sorcerer could complete his spell, sending them both into the dreaded realm.

During the years that Quan Chi spent in the Netherrealm, he would be chased, brutalised, and tortured by Scorpion. He had little chance of escape, as his powers were weakened while in the Netherrealm, and Scorpion's power and strength conversely increased. Quan Chi eventually struck a deal with the Oni Drahmin and Moloch, who fought off Scorpion for him. When Quan Chi escaped the Netherrealm through a portal, Scorpion followed him, but the volatile portal did not send him to the same place. He continued to hound Quan Chi in a game of cat-and-mouse until he found himself ambushed by Drahmin and Moloch, who had also escaped the Netherrealm. They threw him into the soulnado, believing that it would kill the ninja spectre once and for all.

Scorpion, however, managed to escape into the Void before the purity of the soulnado tore him apart. While in the Void, he met the Elder Gods, in whom he had never believed, and forever became changed from what he saw. He also witnessed Raiden's sacrifice and Onaga's dominance beginning to unfold. The Elder Gods were aware of his presence and enhanced his mortal and supernatural abilities, making him the Champion of the Elder Gods. They gave him a new mission, to seek and destroy Onaga before he unmade the realms. For the first time in his life, Scorpion descended from the heavens and back into Outworld, where his mission began. And this time, the realms' survival may depend on his success.

Sektor Edit this entry

Click for larger image
Throughout the various Mortal Kombat games he was involved in, Sektor has grown into an ever more menacing mechanised warrior. He represents the closest thing to evil a cyborg can be, and combines traits of both a stealthy ninja and a ruthless killing machine fit for modern warfare. In contrast to his counterpart Cyrax, Sektor never bothered to rediscover his human side, and may be unable to. As far as this could be said about a cyborg, it is likely that he suffers from a form of insanity. He is capable of independent thought and action like Cyrax and Smoke, but unlike them, shows no sign of emotion. Mortal Kombat Deception's Konquest mode depicts him as speaking in third person.

When the Lin Kuei clan decided to automate their ninja in the events leading up to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Sektor, out of loyalty, was their first member to volunteer to undergo the process, and would later appear to be their most successful creation yet. Designated unit LK-9T9, he was sent to find and kill the rogue clansman Sub-Zero. He attempted to complete this mission twice but never succeeded. Events would leave him as the only active cyborg remaining of the three created, with Smoke having been captured and shut down in an Outworld prison, and Cyrax having become a member of the Outerworld Investigation Agency after his soul was restored.

Sometime during his travels to Edenia to find and kill Sub-Zero, as well as locate Cyrax, Sektor's circuits became corrupted, leaving him unstable. Subsequently, he returned to the Lin Kuei, defeated the Grandmaster, and claimed the Dragon Medallion and position as its head for himself. Sub-Zero, perceiving the threat of Sektor's leadership, returned to the Lin Kuei and battled him, claiming the title. After his defeat, Sektor went to Japan and formed the Tekunin, his own clan of cyborg ninja warriors.

Shang Tsung Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
Shang Tsung is a demonic shapeshifter, who needs to consume souls in order to sustain his health and life. In the Mortal Kombat series, he is the epitome of cunning and decadence, as symbolised by his preference for lavish parties, grand palaces and stylish clothing. Unlike the crude Shao Kahn, this bombast is a façade, disguising Tsung's true intellectual and mental sophistication. His nemesis is Liu Kang, but throughout his unnatural lifespan, he has earned the hatred of many others.

Contrary to popular perception, Shang Tsung was not born in Outworld, but actually came from Earthrealm. He was once a representative of Earthrealm who fought in the early days of the Mortal Kombat tournament. His lust for knowledge and power would cause him to go astray by satisfying his own needs. The Gods became angry, and they cursed him: he would rapidly age, unless he consumed the living souls of other people. A side effect of consuming souls was that Shang Tsung gained their knowledge, and the constant revitalisation extended his life. By becoming a roaming sorcerer, he was enlisted by Outworld's emperor Shao Kahn many millennia ago. There, he became leader of the cult of Shadow Priests.

It was Shang Tsung who was instrumental in Kahn's plan to have his dead queen Sindel reborn on Earth so he could claim both her and that realm, and it was also he who supervised the Mortal Kombat tournaments on Earth. Through his superior powers, he quickly overcame all competition. He incurred his first defeat, however, (due to Tsung becoming both arrogant and overconfident) at the hands of the Great Kung Lao, who was in turn defeated later by Tsung's student, the Shokan prince Goro. Shang Tsung consumed his soul in retaliation for his earlier defeat, and learned of the location of Shinnok's amulet. He traded this knowledge to Quan Chi in exchange for assistance in reviving Queen Sindel at a later date. At this time his body had aged quite considerably. Tsung then presided over the tournament for the next 500 years, watching Goro rack up a winning streak that would eventually unbalance the furies and allow his lord Shao Kahn to invade Earthrealm.

Near the end of this time period, Tsung learned of the swordsman Kenshi. Realising that Kenshi's pride could easily be exploited, Tsung disguised himself as an old man named Song. He praised Kenshi for his ability, telling him that he deserved a sword worthy of his skill. He then led Kenshi through an ancient underground labyrinth, and stopped before a deep well, covered by a large stone. Tsung informed Kenshi the sword lay within. Once Kenshi removed the lid, the souls of the swordsman's warrior king ancestors were released, blinding Kenshi. Tsung revealed his true self, proceeded to consume the souls, and left Kenshi to die, not knowing the swordsman would survive to become a bitter enemy.

During the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament, the final victory that would enable Kahn to conquer Earth, Liu Kang, a Shaolin monk, defeated Goro, breaking the streak. Shang Tsung challenged Liu Kang to preserve the chance of dominating Earthrealm. Liu Kang prevailed, and Shang Tsung went back to Outworld. Dragged before Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung begged for his life. He told the tyrant that if they challenged Earthrealm to Mortal Kombat in Outworld, they would have to accept or forfeit. Kahn agreed to this plan, and restored Tsung's youth, gambling that the Elder Gods would not recognise him after so long. After Shao Kahn's defeat at the hands of Liu Kang, Shang Tsung contacted Quan Chi and called in the favour. To perform the task, Shang Tsung was made more powerful by Shao Kahn and he began the process. When Queen Sindel was revived in Earthrealm, Shao Kahn could reach across the realms and reclaim her, forcefully merging Earthrealm with Outworld. Shang Tsung led one of Kahn's extermination squads to hunt down the fighters that Raiden had protected. Upon Kahn's defeat, Shang Tsung retreated with him back to Outworld proper, when the merger was reversed. Tsung would then be imprisoned for his failure to help his master merge Earthrealm into Outworld.

A few years later, Shang Tsung found Quan Chi in his palace courtyard, fighting Scorpion. When Quan Chi defeated him, he gave him an offer: if Tsung helped him revive the lost army of the Dragon King by means of his ability to transplant souls, he would open a soulnado to the Heavens, giving him an endless supply of souls. Tsung accepted, and together, they formed the Deadly Alliance. In order to carry out their scheme however, they first needed to remove the two largest obstacles in their way: Shao Kahn and Liu Kang.

Shang Tsung introduced Quan Chi to Shao Kahn, vouched for his loyalty, and then they attacked him. After killing him and accepting Kano's offer to serve them, they travelled through a portal known only to sorcerers and deities to Earthrealm, and headed to the Wu Shi Academy. There, Shang Tsung disguised himself as Kung Lao and approached Liu Kang. As Liu practised his kata, Shang revealed his true face and attacked. Although Liu had the upper hand, Quan Chi struck from behind, giving Shang the opportunity to finally take his revenge on Liu Kang by breaking his neck and taking his soul.

Shang Tsung did not fully trust Quan Chi, so upon returning to Outworld, he gave the Oni Drahmin and Moloch (who had escaped from the Netherrealm) an offer: after Tsung performed his part in the plan, Quan Chi, who the two despised for abandoning them in the infernal pits after promising to free them, would be theirs to do with as they wished.

The Deadly Alliance soon commanded Kano's troops to force a small Outworld village to construct a new palace around the tomb to house the soulnado. When one of the citizens, Li Mei, attacked Kano, they offered to free her village if she could win a tournament they would hold. About the same time, they approached Mavado, offering him a deal as well; he could earn the right to fight and kill Kano, in exchange for eliminating Kenshi, who had been spying on Tsung. Mavado accomplished his mission, and the Alliance granted him his wish. Li Mei, having won the local tournament, demanded her reward, but her soul instead began to be transferred to a mummified soldier of Onaga's army. It was at this time that the forces of Earthrealm, led by Raiden, attacked. Li Mei was rescued by Bo' Rai Cho, who escaped with her, but the remainder of the warriors assaulted the Alliance.

The two defeated Earthrealm's champions, and finally, Raiden. Their victory, however, would not be savoured. Shang's lust for power and Quan Chi's suspicion finally came to light. The two fought, and Quan Chi emerged the victor. But immediately after defeating Tsung, he was confronted by a reborn Onaga, who seemed to shrug off his most powerful blasts with ease. Tsung regained consciousness, and recognising the Dragon King to be an immediate threat, assisting Quan Chi in attacking him. Moments later, the thunder god did as well, but their combined efforts could not stop the former Outworld ruler, who had come to reclaim Quan Chi's amulet and his ancient army. In Raiden's ensuing last-ditch attempt at victory through a self-sacrificial blast, Shang Tsung was caught in the blast, apparently killing him and releasing the soul of Liu Kang.

Shao Kahn Edit this entry
Click for larger image Shao Kahn, who resembles an Asian warrior-king in many respects, embodies evil in many forms. He is known for his godlike strength, extreme callousness, brutality and his fondness of personal executions, but rises above the level of a mere warlord through his intelligence and knowledge of black magic. Like his subordinate Shang Tsung, he has the power to consume other souls. His greatest strength is the his ability to work towards his goals with great tenacity and his ability to organise; but his greatest weaknesses are his arrogance and his overconfidence.

Shao Kahn originally served as an advisor to Onaga when he ruled Outworld as the Dragon King. Onaga's empire had become the most powerful in the realms and so he began searching for a way to become immortal. Before his goal could be realised, Shao Kahn made his move by poisoning Onaga and taking his kingdom. Leading whatever troops that remained loyal to the Dragon King, Kahn continued many of the former emperor's plans. He continued to add lesser realms to Outworld, either through direct konquest or through Mortal Kombat.

A milestone in his military victories was the merging of Edenia with Outworld. After his warriors had won in Mortal Kombat, Kahn invaded the realm. On the battlefield, Kahn killed King Jerrod, and took Queen Sindel as his wife, raising their daughter, Princess Kitana, as his own. He had the young princess trained as his personal guard and assassin. Sindel took her own life in an attempt to escape subservience to the emperor. Unwilling to be denied, Kahn held her soul in Outworld, stopping her transition to the afterlife.

Many years later, Kahn chose his next konquest: Earthrealm. He sent Shang Tsung and eventually Goro to Earthrealm to prepare it for an invasion. A turning point came when Prince Goro defeated the Great Kung Lao and started a winning streak that would last for 500 years. Shang Tsung, a shapeshifter, supervised the tournament. The tenth Mortal Kombat however, saw the defeat of both Goro and Tsung by a Shaolin monk, Liu Kang. Shang Tsung begged for his life with Shao Kahn, and came up with a plan to lure Earth's chosen warriors to Outworld for a second tournament. If Earthrealm's champions would be killed, they would not be able to cause further damage to Kahn's plans. With the captured Kano and Sonya Blade as bait, and the plan to enrage Liu Kang by sending Baraka and his troops to destroy the Shaolin temples, they confidently waited for the Earth warriors to fall into the trap. Despite Kahn's vast power, Liu Kang's determination saw him through, and he defeated the despot. Unwilling to accept defeat, Kahn called his armies to destroy the Earthrealm warriors. They fled back to Earthrealm, out of Kahn's clutches.

By this time, Shang Tsung had good news for the emperor: he could resurrect Queen Sindel in Earthrealm, and Kahn could reach across the border to claim her, which would merge Earthrealm and Outworld in the process. Kahn had Tsung proceed, and when he reached across, the realms merged, ripping the souls of every living being in Earthrealm from their bodies. Kahn's day finally seemed to have come. Lord Raiden had protected the souls of a handful of warriors, but Kahn sent extermination squads to kill them. In the ensuing battles, Kahn was confronted by Kung Lao, a Shaolin monk and descendant of the warrior Goro defeated to become champion, but Kahn crushed him. Raiden brought Liu Kang to fight him again, and the Shaolin monk wore Kahn down enough for him to recall his squads and retreat to Outworld, which stopped the merger and restored Earthrealm to its original status. To make matters worse for Kahn, many of his loyal soldiers had abandoned him. But worst of all, Kitana had succeeded in turning Sindel to her side, and restoring Edenia as an independent realm.

The emperor was now greatly weakened, and would remain so for a period of several years, remaining inactive during Shinnok's war against the Elder Gods. The Edenians had in the meantime made peace and military treaties with the Shokan, whom Kahn had always heavily relied on, and were ready to attack Outworld a few years later. It was only through his new commander Kano's ingenuity, and the stealth of his unreliable assassin Noob Saibot (who had critically wounded Goro), that Kahn was able to save the day and force the Edenian army into a draw. Soon afterwards, the sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung entered his throne room, and swore false allegiance to the emperor. Quan Chi and Shang Tsung would catch Shao Kahn off guard and murder him.

Sheeva Edit this entry

Click for larger image
Sheeva belongs to the ancient race of the Shokan, described as a subterranean people living in Outworld. Like all of her race, she possesses a tall, muscular build, red eyes, and four arms. Sheeva served as the personal bodyguard of Queen Sindel during Shao Kahn's failed invasion of Earthrealm.

Because of Prince Goro's reign as Grand Champion of Mortal Kombat, the Shokan are among the most elite of Outworld's citizens. They maintain a high class status among the population, and are Kahn's most prized soldiers on the battlefield. One of the greatest Shokan warriors to gain Kahn's attention is the female, Sheeva. With her exquisitely long legs, she has a roundhouse kick that has become legend among the Shokan. Kahn delights in watching her battle, smiling ear to ear when she pile drives an opponent into the ground with her fists. His favourite of her skills, however, is the ability to skin her victims in seconds with her bare hands.

When Shao Kahn resurrected Queen Sindel as the first step in his invasion of Earth, it came as no surprise to anyone that he appointed Sheeva to be her personal protector. Sheeva was quite upset, however, when Kahn appoints Motaro, a Centaur, to lead his extermination squads into battle. This was an insult to the Shokan race, and she demanded to know why Kahn would do this. Shao Kahn became angered, and warned her never to demand anything from him. He explained that the Shokan had recently disappointed him, and he no longer had faith in them. While devising strategies with his generals, Kahn was frequently distracted by the bickering between Sheeva and Motaro. He constantly ordered them to co-operate, losing his patience with every incident.

During the ensuing battles, Sheeva put the hurt on anyone who tried to get close to Sindel. After dispatching countless enemies, she was confronted by Jade and the renegade Princess Kitana. They intended to free Sindel from Kahn's spell, but they needed to get through Sheeva first. Her brute strength was simply not enough to defeat these two highly skilled warriors. Sheeva was downed by Kitana and Jade, who rushed to confront Sindel. Embarrassed for her failure, Sheeva made her retreat back to Outworld.

When she arrived, she was shocked to learn that Shao Kahn had betrayed the Shokan, and had launched an offensive against them. She joined her brethren in fighting Kahn's warriors. The Shokan were far outnumbered, and could not hope to win. Luckily, Shao Kahn was defeated by Earth's warriors, and recalled his troops from all fronts. Sheeva took this opportunity to get revenge on her nemesis, Motaro.

While the Shokan were in negotiations with the Edenians and Centaurians, she snuck her way into Kahn's palace. She learned that Motaro had nursed his Earthrealm ally, Kano, back to health. She secretly approached Kano, and offered him a deal, asking for his assistance in assassinating Motaro. In exchange, she would pay him in precious jewels, extracted from Kuatan's magnificent mines. Kano agreed. Some time later, Motaro had returned to the palace. Sheeva waited silently in the shadows, as Kano attacked the unsuspecting Centaur. As Motaro was caught off guard, Sheeva joined the attack. She quickly learned just how unreliable Kano is. As soon as she made her move, he fled, leaving her to face Motaro alone. She tried to disregard her anger, as she prepared to do battle with her hated rival. She eventually defeated Motaro and went on to face Kahn, but was defeated herself by the powerful emperor.

Shinnok Edit this entry
Click for larger image Shinnok is considered one of the most evil beings in Mortal Kombat. A vengeful and powerful fallen Elder God, Shinnok appeared in Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero as the main villain.

Unlike Shao Kahn, Shinnok relies less on brute strength and fear-mongering, and more on magical powers and ancient artefacts. He is the ruler of the Netherrealm, possessing millions of years' worth of knowledge and power, including the ability to impersonate other beings perfectly, as well as to transform into an immense demon. Shinnok demands from his followers unwavering faith and loyalty, and will not hesitate to kill anyone who doubts or challenges him.

Shinnok's fall from grace was caused by his lust for power and more specifically, his desire to take Earthrealm for himself. At the dawn of time when the realms were created, Shinnok desired to rule Earthrealm, and thus acquire for himself immense power. However, Shinnok couldn't enter Earthrealm without sacrificing his status as Elder God. To resolve this issue without directly defying the sacred rules, Shinnok created a powerful amulet, weakened the dimensional barriers, and entered Earthrealm. During the war against his fellow gods, he came into direct conflict with the thunder god Raiden.

During the final stages of this war, Raiden was forced to choose between sacrificing Earth's indigenous races, or ceding the rule of Earthrealm to Shinnok. The angered Elder gods intervened, and assisted Raiden in his struggle. Raiden defeated Shinnok, and stripped him of his amulet. Shinnok was then banished to the deepest regions of the Netherrealm. However, at the expense of Shinnok's defeat, the dimensional fibres of the worlds were severely weakened, and the Saurians, Earth's indigenous life form at the time, were nearly exterminated.

In the Netherrealm, Shinnok endured constant torture from the Netherrealm's overlord, Lucifer. Shinnok was at his mercy until he encountered a sorcerer, Quan Chi, who could travel through the realms at will. Quan Chi would aid Shinnok in overthrowing Lucifer and taking his throne, becoming ruler of the Netherrealm. As payment for Quan Chi's efforts, Shinnok endowed him with incredible powers, making him arch-sorcerer of the Netherrealm.

Shinnok began building his second army of darkness, and plotted to escape the Netherrealm once more. In order to do so however, he would need his lost sacred amulet. After centuries of searching, Quan Chi eventually discovered the amulet's whereabouts for him: it had been in the possession of the Lin Kuei. Using the Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero, Quan Chi recovered it, but unbeknownst to Shinnok, he created a flawed replica in its place which he delivered, keeping the original for himself.

His time in the Netherrealm was well spent, having built a massive army, as well as a fanatical cult of demons called the Brotherhood of the Shadow, dedicated to worshipping him. Also loyal to him was Tanya. He changed the Netherrealm's appearance as well, to make it look closer to Earthrealm.

During Shao Kahn's failed invasion of Earthrealm, Shinnok ordered Noob Saibot to spy on these events and eventually side with the Earthrealm warriors (Shao Kahn had also unsuccessfully attempted to invade the Netherrealm, which Shinnok had seen as a sign that the Emperor was becoming too powerful).

Shinnok's first target was Edenia. After successfully posing as a group of refugees, Shinnok and his highest generals, using Tanya's Edenian connections, were allowed entrance to the peaceful realm. Immediately, he seized this opportunity to bring in a full-scale invasion force, and captured Queen Sindel and Princess Kitana.

Unfortunately for Shinnok, his newfound empire was short-lived. Despite invading the Heavens themselves and killing many of the Elder Gods, Raiden and his warriors managed to penetrate Shinnok's defences in order to stop him. He eventually faced Liu Kang, and in the final showdown, he was defeated by the Shaolin monk and was sent back to the Netherrealm for all eternity.

Shirai-Ryu Edit this entry
Click for larger image The Shirai-Ryu were a group of Japanese ninja in the Mortal Kombat universe credited with bringing Ninjutsu and other secret martial arts to Japan from China. For years, they were bitter rivals with the Lin Kuei, from which they had originally sprung. Their rivalry had ended by the necromancer Quan Chi wiping out the entire clan and the elder Sub-Zero killing one of its members, Hanzo Hasashi.

The Shirai-Ryu was formed many years ago by a Lin Kuei warrior named Takeda. He eventually grew tiresome of the Lin Kuei and left the clan. However, leaving the clan is punishable by death, and Takeda was sought after by Lin Kuei assassins. He left China and returned to his homeland in Japan, where he offered his services to the lords and generals. His art gradually spread throughout Japan and developed into the art of ninjutsu. In addition to teaching his new art form, he also taught modified versions of Lin Kuei tactics, as well as revealing many of their secrets. This only further infuriated the Lin Kuei when Takeda's teachings became well-known with many followers throughout Japan. His followers became known as the Shirai-Ryu.

The Shirai-Ryu and Lin Kuei became tremendous rivals. Takeda's clan mocked the Lin Kuei by dressing in similar outfits of yellow colour and teaching modified versions of their own secrets. He managed to avoid many assassination attempts well into his later years. He was eventually killed by poison in his tea. It was never known if Lin Kuei was responsible for his death. The animosity between Lin Kuei and Shirai-Ryu continued after his death, as the Shirai-Ryu became more prominent.

Later, the sorcerer Quan Chi hired members from both rival clans to find the Map of the Elements giving directions to Shinnok's amulet. The Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and Shirai-Ryu member Hanzo Hasashi were sent on this mission during the events of Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero. Quan Chi had originally sent Sub-Zero to find the map, but he had also sent Hasashi in the event that Sub-Zero failed in his arduous quest. Neither warrior knew of the other's involvement until they discovered each other in the room of the Shaolin Temple containing the map. Sub-Zero killed Hanzo and retrieved the map. He gave the map to Quan Chi, and as payment to the Lin Kuei, he wiped out the rival Shirai-Ryu clan.

Hanzo returned from death as Scorpion, and met his murderer in the Netherrealm, where Sub-Zero had gone to stop Quan Chi from releasing the fallen Elder God Shinnok. Unable to exact his revenge, Scorpion waited until Mortal Kombat, when he confronted Sub-Zero again. This time it was Sub-Zero who would face death in the tournament. He disappeared into the Netherrealm as the demon Noob Saibot, only to have his younger brother take his place in future tournaments.

Shokan Edit this entry
Shokan is the name of a race of half-human, half-dragon warriors. They are tall, exceptionally strong, and have four arms. They live in a part of Outworld called Kuatan. Goro, Kintaro, and Sheeva belong to this race. They are mortal enemies to the Centaurian race, which includes Motaro.

Shujinko Edit this entry
Click for larger image Shujinko, making his debut in Mortal Kombat Deception but relevant to the series for much longer, is an adventurer who, as a boy, dreamed of fighting Shang Tsung. He has roamed the various realms and studied with many renowned teachers. His old age has made him wise, but at a cost: he bears an immense guilt for releasing Onaga unto the realms again, and now that he is discarded by the Dragon King, has vowed to make up for this mistake. Although he shares some traits with the games' Shaolin monk characters, such as his great receptiveness, deliberation and ability to meditate for hours, he has always been a traveller and a student at heart.

Depicted as a young teenager in Mortal Kombat Deception's Konquest mode, Shujinko was trained by Master Bo' Rai Cho in the art of kombat. Soon, however, Shujinko encountered Damashi, an emissary of the Elder Gods. It was from this point on that Shujinko embarked on a lifelong quest to find the Kamidogu, relics that were hidden in each realm of Mortal Kombat (Earthrealm, Netherrealm, Chaosrealm, Outworld, Orderrealm and Edenia) and place them on an altar in the nexus of the Elder Gods. In order to be able to do his bidding, Damashi gave Shujinko the ability to absorb the fighting styles and special attack patterns of warriors he encountered with great ease.

Shujinko's mission took him more than forty years to complete. By this time, he had missed out on most major events taking place in the realms, such as Shao Kahn's invasion of Earth, Shinnok's short-lived insurrection or the formation of the Deadly Alliance, only hearing about them obliquely or being involved very loosely. Because of his mission, it is said he also missed out on the first Mortal Kombat tournament, despite being an initial choice of the White Lotus Society as their chosen champion (Liu Kang was chosen in his stead). At any rate, when his mission was complete, Damashi revealed himself to be none other than the Dragon King, Onaga, speaking to Shujinko from beyond death.

Onaga used to be emperor of Outworld, and was secretly driven by shards, echoes and memories of the One Being, whose consciousness shattered into the six realms with the creation of the Elder Gods. The One Being's existence does not allow the existence of something else, precisely because it is just that. The Kamidogu, which contain the essential keys and essences of the realms, are powerful tools to merge the realms. The last tool Onaga needed to perfect his strategy was the sacred amulet that was long in possession of Quan Chi. After defeating the Deadly Alliance and Raiden, Onaga also had the amulet. For this, Shujinko assumed full responsibility, and embarked on a desperate quest to destroy Onaga, believing himself the only person capable of doing so.

Sindel Edit this entry

Click for larger image
Sindel is a distinctly older and mature character, with flowing grey hair and a regal attitude befitting of her role as Queen of Edenia. Another factor that contributes to her uniqueness is the fact that at one point in the series, she was actually undead. In spite of her gloomy, gothic appearance, Sindel is benevolent in nature. She rules the realm of Edenia alongside her daughter, Princess Kitana. Sindel's power appears to be more one of an inner, ethereal nature, however, and she has a natural affinity with aerial magic, as evidenced by her ability to levitate and manipulate sonic waves. Sindel's story began when Shao Kahn invaded Edenia from Outworld after his warriors had won ten Mortal Kombat tournaments in a row. During this war and the subsequent merger of both realms, Shao Kahn personally executed many Edenian nobles, including King Jerrod, Sindel's husband, and Rain's father, a general in Jerrod's army. In order to legitimise his rule among the Edenians who had not perished in the terrible conflict, Kahn took Sindel as his wife, and adopted Princess Kitana as his daughter.

Sindel was driven to insanity with grief for her dead husband, and her state of near-slavery, as she had been forced into in a new marriage with Shao Kahn. As such, she committed suicide, and her soul descended into the Netherrealm as a result. Shao Kahn was not overcome with mourning; instead, he devised a means to use Sindel to his advantage, even after her death. Growing frustrated at his failed attempts to take Earthrealm through Mortal Kombat, he ordered his elite order of Shadow Priests, lead by Shang Tsung, to make it so that Sindel would someday be reborn on Earth. When that occurred, Kahn would be able to temporarily step through the portal to Earth to reclaim Sindel, since as his queen, she technically belonged in the merged Outworld-Edenia. Through an intricate deal that also involved Shinnok and Quan Chi, it was further arranged that when reborn, Sindel would have no memory of her past, and that her soul would be tainted with evil.

Years later, Sindel was reborn on Earth shortly before the events of Mortal Kombat 3 took place. As planned, Shao Kahn and his army marched through the dimensional gates that linked his world to Earthrealm, and reclaimed her. In the process, he initiated the merger process to conquer Earth, and stripped it of every human soul, a technique he had perfected over the millennia of his vile rule.

But the key to his konquest would also prove to be one of the elements that led to his undoing. Kitana had allied with Earthrealm's warriors, and managed to confront her mother. With her daughter's help, Sindel was able to regain her memories, and turned on the emperor. When Kahn was at last defeated, Sindel, Kitana and other Edenian rebels such as Jade, presumably seized this opportunity to tear Edenia loose from Outworld.

The revitalised realm proved to be unstable, however. In spite of fostering diplomatic ties with Earth and trying war criminals such as Reptile, an act of treason from Tanya enabled the newly freed fallen Elder God Shinnok to quickly overrun the realm and hold the queen hostage. Before Shinnok's dark presence could spread, however, he was defeated by Liu Kang. Edenia went on to enjoy a few years of peace, engaging in diplomatic ties with the Shokan people from Outworld, who had long grown disgruntled with Shao Kahn.

The Deadly Alliance seized power in Outworld just as an Edenian army, led by Kitana and Prince Goro, had scored a few major victories against Outworld's armies. Although initially this chaos at the top of Outworld's establishment seemed to bode well for Edenia, things ultimately went awry when the Deadly Alliance was victorious and both Kitana and Goro had been killed. To make matters worse, Onaga reclaimed Outworld's throne and had further weakened Edenia's forces by having Mileena pose as Kitana, while the seemingly inept Bo' Rai Cho held command over the remaining troops of Edenia. With his Tarkatan warriors, Onaga then invaded Edenia and captured Sindel.

During the events of Mortal Kombat Deception, Jade liberated Sindel from her prison, and together they travelled back to Outworld, where they knew Onaga's original body still lay in its tomb. Sindel's plan was to use her superior magical skills to lure the Dragon King into a trap, and end the imminent threat to the realms.

Skarlet Edit this entry

Her very existence within the series came about via a glitch present in Mortal Kombat II, in which Kitana would sometimes appear red. Rumours circulated that she was a hidden character, and was to be later dubbed Skarlet by fans.

Existing as a means to serve Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, Skarlet was created through the fusion of sorcery and the blood of countless warriors. Her strength in battle increases exponentially with each blow; the blood of her opponents absorbed through her own skin. Using a number of miniature daggers and her own ichor as weapons, she is only released to perform duties as a last resort. Skarlet's current mission is to uncover Quan Chi's true intentions and eliminate him should he pose a threat to the emperor.

Smoke Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
Smoke debuted in Mortal Kombat II as a hidden character. He was often spotted in the Living Forest stage in which he (along with Jade) peeked out from behind the trees. Like Reptile, he was simply a grey clad version of Scorpion who moved extremely fast, and emitted puffs of smoke from his body. He had Reptile's fighting stance and Sub-Zero's win pose. Similar to Reptile, he would appear randomly before matches, offering clues about how to fight him. Smoke would not have his own storyline until he was featured in Mortal Kombat 3, where he was once again a hidden character, but accessible to players with the use of a code. In this appearance, he would be a tortured, human soul trapped in the body of a cyborg. His most defining feature is the fact that he constantly seems to emit a smoke or vapour. This, combined with his power to teleport and turn invisible, once made him one of the Lin Kuei's top assassins.

Smoke started out as a ninja assassin of the Chinese Lin Kuei clan. He was a friend and ally of the younger Sub-Zero, and had gone with him to Outworld on his mission to kill Shang Tsung. They did not accomplish their mission. When Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the Lin Kuei, they discovered that their clan had chosen to transform their best warriors into cyborgs, having already performing the procedure on Cyrax and Sektor. Smoke and Sub-Zero turned on their clan and fled. Sub-Zero managed to escape, but Smoke was captured and converted into a cybernetic warrior, designated LK-7T2. Under the programming of the Lin Kuei, Smoke was forced to hunt for his old friend.

During the events of Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Smoke's fortunes continued to fail him. He was captured by Shao Kahn's warriors, after his invasion of Earthrealm. It is unknown if either Kahn, Sub-Zero or the Lin Kuei were aware that Smoke, in fact, still possessed a soul and was one of Raiden's chosen warriors. In any case, Smoke was transported to Outworld as a trophy and was locked away in the bowels of one of Kahn's fortresses. In a state of hopelessness and misery, or possibly to conserve energy, Smoke shut himself down.

Nearly a decade later, however, he was discovered by Noob Saibot. He reactivated the cyborg, whose nanotechnology set about repairing and improving his systems. Reprogramming Smoke to obey only him, Saibot turned the cyber-ninja into both his ally and template for a future army of cyber-demons that was to rise from the Netherrealm.

Sonya Blade Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
Lieutenant Sonya Blade is a member of a top United States Special Forces unit. She is a sternly beautiful, tough-as-nails lieutenant. Her impulsiveness is catalysed by her superior and good friend Major Jackson Briggs. Sonya represents a very emancipated and headstrong woman, but for all her stubbornness and pride, she deeply cares about the lives of her friends and comrades. Johnny Cage, her fellow Earthrealm warrior and friend, seems to view her as a romantic interest, but there has been no indications of her feelings for him, if any. She has a long-standing enmity with the thug Kano, who stands for everything Sonya despises.

Sonya and her team were in hot pursuit of Kano, the leader of the Black Dragon organisation. After he jumped onto a ship, they followed him to a remote island where Shang Tsung's Mortal Kombat tournament was being held. Upon arriving they were ambushed by Tsung's personal guard. To keep her team safe, she agreed to compete in the tournament. Shang Tsung, however, had no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain. He had her unit killed and, after he was defeated by Liu Kang, took her and Kano prisoner to Outworld to appease the emperor, Shao Kahn.

Sonya was able to send a signal to her superior Jax from Outworld, however, and during the events of Mortal Kombat II he travelled there to find her. Jax made contact with the other Earthrealm warriors, and together they learned of Kahn's scheme to invade Earth. She was later freed and Kano arrested, but as soon as they had passed through the portal to Earth, Kano escaped and ran back into Outworld.

Sonya and Jax now had other things on their minds, however. They tried to warn the United States government of the impending invasion, but their claims went unheeded. As such, they began preparing by themselves for the coming invasion. When the fateful day finally came, Shao Kahn stripped Earthrealm of all human souls, with the exception of a few chosen warriors, one of which was Sonya, who would soon encounter her old nemesis Kano on top of a skyscraper near Kahn's fortress. A fierce battle was waged between the two. Kano gained the upper hand, and kicked Sonya onto a stone gargoyle. Sonya feigned defeat, but when Kano advanced to finish Sonya off, grabbing her by the hair, she performed her most infamous special move: the leg grab, and hurled Kano off the roof to his apparent death, taking a lock of her hair with him.

After her journey into Outworld and Shao Kahn's near destruction of Earth, Sonya became a member of Earth's own Outerworld Investigation Agency. The Black Dragon kept crossing her path, however. Its last known member, Jarek, had fled to Edenia while Sonya was chasing him. This lead Sonya and Jax to team up with Raiden and Liu Kang to free that realm from the fallen Elder God Shinnok's grasp, and to prevent him from coming to Earth. After Shinnok's defeat, in which Jarek had reluctantly participated to save himself, Jarek tried to kill Sonya, but died in the attempt.

Years later, Sonya would once again heed Raiden's call, this time to travel to Outworld after the Deadly Alliance had slain Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. For Sonya, this coincided with her search for two missing OIA agents, Cyrax and Kenshi. She was unable to find them, however, and was killed in a fight with the Deadly Alliance and its minions. The Deadly Alliance's victory was short-lived, as Onaga had been resurrected moments after their victory over Raiden himself, and reclaimed Outworld, as well as the amulet. With his ability to raise the dead at will, he resurrected and enslaved Sonya and her fallen comrades.

Stryker Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
Stryker was one of the chosen warriors in Mortal Kombat 3 whose souls were protected against the corruption techniques or soul stealing abilities of Shao Kahn and his minions. Originally a police officer in a large city on the East Coast of the United States, he employed his modern weapons, such as bombs, guns, tasers and a baton in battle against Kahn's forces. Stryker is a somewhat heavy-looking man with a white-blue shirt, kombat boots, black police pants and a cap he puts on backwards. His gun dangles from his belt.

Stryker was the leader of the Riot Control Brigade when Shao Kahn's portal opened over New York City. Every single human soul was stolen by Shao Kahn, with the exception of the chosen warriors. Stryker did not understand why he had been spared, until he received a vision from Raiden, instructing him to head west in order to meet with the other chosen warriors and learn about the importance of his survival. Along with the other warriors, Stryker assisted in liberating Earthrealm from Shao Kahn's clutches. What became of him after that is unknown, however his appearance in Mortal Kombat Deception's Konquest mode indicates that he may have journeyed to Orderrealm in order to join the Seidan Guardsmen. His appearance in the upcoming release of Mortal Kombat Armageddon, with a completely new hi-tech redesign, will indicate whether or not this is true.

Sub-Zero Edit this entry
Click for larger image

Click for larger image
In many ways, the younger Sub-Zero shows that he has been greatly influenced by his elder brother, as they share many personality traits. However, through the years, Sub-Zero has evolved from what fans labelled a 'carbon copy' of his brother to a man of integrity, great self-discipline and great power. The younger Sub-Zero predictably shared many traits with his older brother upon his introduction. Like the elder, the younger Sub-Zero gives the impression of being a stern, distant and cold man who goes about his business silently, without attracting unwanted attention. However, the similarities end there, since the disparities between the brothers, who were once neutral and almost indistinct from each other, have now grown so large that one could speak of the evil twin syndrome. While the younger Sub-Zero was depicted as a young ninja who was living in the shadow of his older brother, he has since changed and grown into a young man who has steadily progressed towards the more humane sides of moral issues. This change in characteristics has not only strengthened him as a man, but has also set him apart from his former Lin Kuei counterparts. This included leaving his clan in disgust and breaking the sacred codes of honour, joining the rebellion against Shao Khan and assisting Raiden and Liu Kang (along with Earthrealm's other chosen warriors). More recently, he defeated the cyborg assassin Sektor to gain the leadership of the Lin Kuei and become the Grandmaster, where he has grown even stronger and more powerful. He is a dependable ally of Earthrealm who is willing to assist when needed, especially when Raiden gives the call. While he may not be Mortal Kombat's greatest champion, nor is he considered to be the greatest warrior that ever lived, he is without question one of the very best warriors that Earthrealm has to offer. He comes off as the most polyvalent of them all. He, like much of the Mortal Kombat cast, also follows a character archetype, in his case the enigmatic hero that shows up to aid the main heroes when needed.

It is known that the father of both brothers (the fourth man to be known as Sub-Zero in his lineage) was a secret operative for the clan in the United States. He married an American woman and together they had two sons and a daughter. Against the will of their mother, the father took the sons with him to move back to China at a certain time, and as such both brothers became warriors of the Lin Kuei. The mother and the daughter remained in the United States.

Following the death of his older brother and failure to kill Shang Tsung, the young Lin Kuei warrior was sent to Outworld along with his close friend Smoke to complete the assignment after Shao Kahn's Mortal Kombat tournament was announced. While travelling to Outworld with Smoke, Sub-Zero discovered Scorpion's foul vendetta against his brother; Scorpion had risen from the Netherrealm once more upon learning of Sub-Zero's survival and continued to hold a grudge against the new Sub-Zero, believing him to be the same man that killed him years ago. However, Scorpion received a rude awakening when he witnessed Sub-Zero spare the life of a defeated opponent whom he battled during the tournament, which left him confused for he did not understand why this Lin Kuei warrior showed mercy. Scorpion then came to the realisation that this new Sub-Zero was the younger brother of the man who murdered him so long ago, and thus swore not to harm him. Sub-Zero never learned why the spectre spared his life. Despite their efforts, neither accomplished the mission that they were tasked to do for the Lin Kuei, although they did assist Liu Kang, Raiden and their allies in Liu Kang's battle with Shao Kahn. Smoke and Sub-Zero returned home empty handed.

In the events leading up to Mortal Kombat Trilogy, the Lin Kuei obtained technology that could vastly improve the effectiveness of their warriors, and they chose four of their number to undergo the procedure that would turn them into cyborg assassins: Sub-Zero, Smoke, Cyrax, and Sektor. Sub-Zero and Smoke refused to participate, and fled the clan, who declared them anathema. While Sub-Zero successfully managed to escape, Smoke was captured and subsequently turned into a cyborg. In leaving the clan, Sub-Zero had broken the Lin Kuei codes of honour. After Smoke's automation, the Lin Kuei programmed the three cyborg ninjas to hunt and terminate Sub-Zero, who by this time had received a vision from Raiden and agreed to join the rebellion against a new threat.

The armies of Shao Kahn attacked Earthrealm, and Sub-Zero was among the few mortals whose souls were spared so they could fight Kahn and his extermination squads. These events also signalled the beginning of Sub-Zero's transition to a greater moral consciousness. Unluckily for Sub-Zero, his cybernetic assassins, lacking souls, also survived. Sub-Zero eventually encountered Smoke and convinced him that he still had a soul, which then overrode Smoke's Lin Kuei programming. With his new ally, Sub-Zero battled and defeated both Sektor and Cyrax. However, instead of destroying Cyrax's CPU, he reprogrammed the cyborg to hunt and terminate Shao Khan (at which Cyrax failed — he would wander in Jade's Desert and become trapped there). Smoke was less fortunate: he was captured by Shao Kahn's troops and transported to Outworld. Eventually, the Earthrealm warriors were victorious and Earth was restored to its normal state.

When the banished Elder God Shinnok threatened Earthrealm, Raiden once again summoned Sub-Zero to assist in the defence of Earth. In homage to his older brother, Sub-Zero donned his sibling's uniform, and brought to the battle information passed to him which could prove essential to Raiden in his mission to stop Shinnok. In the meantime, Quan Chi had convinced Scorpion that Sub-Zero still retained some culpability for the destruction of the Shirai-Ryu, turning the spectre's hostile attentions to him once more. Sub-Zero met Scorpion in Goro's Lair and the two fought, with Scorpion gaining the upper hand. When it seemed that Scorpion was going to kill Sub-Zero, the Lin Kuei warrior revealed that he had no role in the murder of Scorpion's clan. Quan Chi, convinced that Sub-Zero was about to die nonetheless, readily admitted to his guilt to Scorpion, who then turned on Quan Chi and transported the sorcerer into the Netherrealm, where Scorpion hunted Quan Chi unceasingly. This was to be the last time Scorpion and Sub-Zero were to actively oppose each other.

Some time afterwards, the defeated cyborg Sektor assassinated the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei and challenged Sub-Zero to a fight for the leadership of the Lin Kuei clan. Realising how great an opportunity this was, as well as recognising Sektor as a threat, Sub-Zero accepted the cyborg's challenge and defeated him, gaining the position. Sub-Zero also came into possession of the Dragon Medallion, which enhanced his freezing powers to levels he had never thought possible. Great changes were made to the Lin Kuei after Sub-Zero's victory. He moved the Lin Kuei to a remote area in the arctic where they would not be disrupted and began training them as a force for good, teaching his students not only formidable fighting skills, but the value of life as well, turning them into wiser warriors rather than mindless assassins.

While in Outworld, the demon known as Sareena encountered him. Since she had freed his brother from his confines of the Netherrealm so many years ago, Sub-Zero offered her asylum within the Lin Kuei.

Sub-Zero held a tournament at the Lin Kuei headquarters in order to recruit strong warriors, and a female who surprisingly harnessed the same freezing powers as Sub-Zero emerged as the winner. Impressed by her exceptional skill, Sub-Zero made Frost his apprentice, breaking Lin Kuei tradition. While she was a superb fighter, Frost did not agree with Sub-Zero's philosophies and appeared arrogant and aloof, which would generate some friction between her and Sub-Zero's allies, specifically Sonya.

After Liu Kang's murder at the hands of the newly formed Deadly Alliance, Raiden asked Sub-Zero to join him in the fight for Earthrealm's survival. Surprised at the tragic news, Sub-Zero agreed, but mainly for personal reasons: he wanted to gain the respect of his fellow Lin Kuei and prove his worth once again to his clan and to most importantly, himself.

When Sub-Zero and Frost were separated from the other Earthrealm warriors in Outworld, Frost attempted to steal the Dragon Medallion. Unable to control the medallion's powerful energies, she was consumed by her own freezing abilities and died. Sub-Zero placed the blame squarely on his own shoulders for her death, feeling he had failed to dampen her pride and teach her the same philosophies of life he had.

As he searched for a place to bury Frost, he encountered the ruins of an Outworld civilisation capable of manipulating cold. After careful study and examination of this race, the cryomancers, he came to the realisation that he and Frost were descendants of this race. Burying and forgiving her for her rashness, Sub-Zero donned an ancient suit of armour found in the ruins and headed for the Earthrealm portal, to rendezvous with Raiden and the Earthrealm forces, a band of Tarkatan warriors attacked him. Believing he would die, Sub-Zero gave the fight everything he had. Strangely, he heard his armour speak to him, and it helped him win the battle against the seemingly endless horde. He was then assaulted by the zealot Hotaru, but emerged victorious. Discovering Kenshi, who was severely injured after an attack by Mavado, he brought the wounded samurai back to health, and together they set out for the portal, becoming friends and travelling companions. Unknown to them, they were being pursued, however, by Hotaru once more.
