2017 marks an incredible milestone for NetherRealm Studios
, with their most popular franchise set to celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary. To mark the momentous occasion, studio Creative Director Ed Boon joined host Geoff Keighley in the E3 Coliseum to discuss everything from past and present Mortal Kombat titles to its Hollywood movies and the future of the series.
Originally planned as a fighting game based on the Van Damme hit Bloodsport, Mortal Kombat was created by a small team of four at the now defunct Midway Games
comprising of Ed Boon, John Tobias, John Vogel and Dan Forden. Soon after it became a worldwide phenomenon, spawning multiple sequels across generations of arcades machines and home consoles, Hollywood movies, comic series and much more.
Boon believes a huge contributing factor to Mortal Kombat’s cult following comes from the team’s ability to keep things fresh by taking risks and changing things up. While there have been some hits and misses over the years, 2015’s Mortal Kombat X
is testament to their staying power, with the most recent title in the franchise breaking all sales records.
