With Midway Games no longer operational due to bankruptcy, Mortal Kombat was about to enter a new era.
The ninth game in the franchise was the first to be officially developed by the newly formed NetherRealm Studios. Although the game’s story begins following the events of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, it served as somewhat of a reboot of the series, covering the events of the first three games.
Taking a step back from previous titles, the game returned to a 2D fighting plane much to the delight of fans. It also introduced a new tag team mode which proved to be incredibly popular. Unlike previous titles, the four attack buttons were mapped to individual limbs. A heavy emphasis was placed on a new “Super Meter” that could be used to enhance special moves, perform Breakers or deliver a savage new attack dubbed the “X-ray Attack.”
Fighting mechanics aside, Mortal Kombat (2011) delivered an outstanding Story mode, building upon the foundations laid in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Challenge Tower mode featured 300 single player challenges of varying difficulty to keep even the most experienced players busy. Popular mini games Test Your Might and Test Your Sight made their return in Challenge Tower, with Test Your Luck and Test Your Strike introduced as a new concepts. The PSVita port received an additional two that made use of the device’s unique capabilities: Test Your Swipe and Test Your Balance.
Mortal Kombat (2011) was also the first in the series to include downloadable content, with four kombatants made available for purchase at a later date (Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain and Freddy Krueger).
