Following rumours back in November that future expansions had been cancelled, today’s announcement confirms the end has arrived for Mortal Kombat 1.

Four new screenshots have also been released, showcasing brand new skins for Scorpion and Sub-Zero from the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie and Johnny Cage and Kitana from its upcoming sequel due to release this October. The four skins, in addition to a fifth for General Shao, can also be purchased from the in-game store using Dragon Krystals as standalone items.

A launch trailer promoting the collection has also been released, with some of the aforementioned skins showcased in gameplay footage. While the Definitive Edition is currently available digitally, there is currently no word on whether or not a physical release is planned.
So, what’s next for NetherRealm Studios? Another Mortal Kombat title to make up for the distaste Mortal Kombat 1 left in the mouths of many fans, a heavily rumoured sequel to Injustice, or something different entirely? Only time will tell.
