Following a slew of updates in recent days, NetherRealm Studios appears to be upping the ante on their Injustice 2 news as the game’s release draws ever closer. The official Injustice website has today been updated to advertise the reveal of a new character on February 2 (North American time). Who will it be? When the veil of secrecy is lifted will we see the first gameplay footage of Poison Ivy or perhaps Braniac who were both teased in the recently released “Lines Redrawn” story trailer? Or will we see someone different entirely join the fray?

His inclusion in Injustice 2 was confirmed during the studio’s Watchtower live stream that aired today and was celebrated by its audience across the globe.

The lines between hero and villain are blurred as a new threat emerges in the latest trailer for Injustice 2. Titled “The Lines are Redrawn,” this latest trailer focuses on the game’s narrative which follows on from its predecessor. While familiar faces Superman, Batman, Supergirl and Wonder Woman make an appearance, new characters emerge during the course of the trailer, with hints delivered as to the inclusion of Robin, Bane and Poison Ivy. Months have passed without so much as a whisper of Injustice 2 news, leading many to speculate on the exact state of the project. That ended today, with Ed Boon revealing the worldwide release date for the title: 16 May, 2017. While Boon did not use the term “release date,” other sources close to the project have acknowledged the date. It also marks studio’s first title to be released outside of their usual April window since Warner Bros.’ acquisition of select Midway assets in 2009.

With all things quiet on the western front, it is perhaps fitting that NetherRealm Studios break their lengthy silence with an amazing rendition of the Mannequin Challenge to Cage the Elephant’s “Trouble”. Planking was all the rage in 2010; 2014 saw the introduction of the hugely popular Ice Bucket Challenge and now Mannequin Challenge videos are sweeping the web. The video marks the studio’s second foray into popular crazes, with members of the team previously releasing an Ice Bucket Challenge video to help raise awareness of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

Galloping Ghost Arcade, the largest video arcade in the United States, held its annual Kombat Kon event (formerly Shang Tsung’s Fight Night) in Illinois over the weekend. Famed Australian director Simon McQuoid, best known for directing commercials for numerous high profile companies such as PlayStation, Range Rover and Beats by Dre, is in talks to direct the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot for New Line. Exclusively reported by Variety, his addition to the crew would see him join Furious 7’s James Wan who is currently lined up to produce the movie alongside Michael Clear, Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein. Writer Greg Russo is said to have also penned the most recent draft script. In preparation for Wonder Woman’s milestone 75th anniversary later this year, NetherRealm Studios have officially announced her inclusion in Injustice 2’s roster during the San Diego Comic-Con International. Armed with her Lasso of Truth and Sword of Athena, Wonder Woman returns to the fray more powerful than ever. NetherRealm Studios have taken advantage of their ESL Mortal Kombat X Pro League Season 3 Finals live stream to debut its very first Injustice 2 gameplay trailer. The video heavily features series newcomers Supergirl, Atrocitus and Gorilla Grodd, with Aquaman, Superman and Batman also making appearances. Aside from the title’s visual flamboyance and fighters’ over-the-top special abilities, the trailer shows off a number of different looks for each kombatant (part of the title’s mysterious “gear system”) and unique pre-fight banter similar to that of Mortal Kombat X.
